The Art of Discipleship

The Word of God will always position you in alignment with the intents and purposes of God. That's why he anoints His servants to dish out His delectable Word to His saints that they may be built up and refreshed. This is also why missing Church is not an option for a child of God. Pastor Francis Appiagyei-Poku shared a life-changing message on "The Art of Discipleship" on Sunday, 10th September, 2017 at the Kingdom Cathedral of Gospel Light International Church.

He described a disciple as one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrine of another. He further explained that to be a disciple is to bind yourself to someone. The original Greek rendering (mathetes) means to be an apprentice.

The man of God went on to expound on five principles of discipleship viz.:

1. Living by the Word.

If you want to be a disciple of Christ, continue in the Word (John 8:31). The Word is so important if you want to follow Jesus. Meditate on it day and night.

2. Commit your life to your Master completely.

The Lord is interested in everything concerning you. You therefore have to totally depend on Him (John 10:1-18, Matthew 6:24, Proverbs 16:3). He charged the congregation to have time for the Lord by minimizing the time spent on smartphones and social media.

3. A disciple has to have a fruit-bearing relationship with Jesus.

God wants us to be fruitful in every aspect of our lives. One Moore says, "Our union with Christ makes possible a life through which others can be saved. When a tree is so full of sap that it can no longer hold it, the result is fruit." Be a soul winner!

4. Be committed to unconditional, selfless love.

Learn to esteem the things of others even beyond yours. Reading from John 13:34-35, the man of God urged the congregants to live in love. He hinted that love made the early Church grow. Adding, he encouraged us to pray for one another.

5. The disciple is one who is committed to fulfilling Christ's commission.

Matthew 28:18:-20 spells out the Great Commission that Jesus gave to His disciples prior to His ascension. That commission is as relevant today (or even more relevant) as it was when He gave it. Pastor Francis said, "It doesn't matter the height you get to, still preach the Gospel." Equip yourself to teach others (2 Timothy 2:2). If you are not a disciple, you cannot teach others.

It was truly a blessing to receive God's good Word that morning!
