Last year, I published a piece in the Daily Graphic, urging readers to sanitize their social media feed. In the article, I outlined a simple method for doing so: before you like, follow, comment, subscribe or share, THINK! Is the post True? Is it Helpful? Is it Inspiring? Is it Necessary? And will it eventually build the knowledgebase of whoever is reading, listening or watching.
I deem it healthy to recommend some very positive channels or pages that will feed you with truth, help you, inspire you, will be relevant to you and power up your knowledgebase. As you already know, due to the pandemic, hours spent online have dramatically surged, meaning that we spend more of our lives online than anywhere else. The question then is: how is our online activity shaping our lives? More importantly, what seeds are we sowing for the next generation as their lives will be pretty much nestled up into surfing the Web practically every moment.
With the introduction of immersive technologies such as the Oculus by Facebook, which is a Virtual Reality device that literally transports you to see what you're watching as though you were really there, we must WATCH OUT!
I remember one day on campus that a hall mate came to our room with virtual reality goggles. There was this horror animated game or movie that they were playing in turns. I couldn't help but laugh at the squeals and shrieks that the young men were making. Why? They were scared because of how real the thing looked. But is fear a good thing? Does having nightmares set you in the right frame of mind to take on the challenges ahead of you in the day?
It's time to take charge of your social media feed; whether it's on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, make a firm decision to filter your scrolling. If it means unfollowing or unliking a particular page, do it. Save your mind from the corruption our there in the world.
This is why I like LinkedIn so much! Of course, I know people say it's sometimes depressing to see how far others may be going when it seems you're stagnated in your spot. However, the truth is that there is a smorgasbord of life-enriching knowledge to choose from on LinkedIn.
Make your life easier by turning a deaf ear to nonsense and receiving wisdom into you. Don't just be led on by the darkness of so-called trending stuff that choke the investment of God's Word in you. Soak in the right stuff. If it means taking a break from social media to 'detox', then do so...but whatever you do, be wise enough to cleanse your mind with the right stuff.
I can't overemphasize how important the Word of God is in helping you to renew your mind. After all, that's actually the only material available to renew your mind. Your mind must receive God-thoughts daily. To do that, I have done a selection of my top twelve Facebook pages that produce quality Christian and life-enriching content that will place you on a trajectory of glory!
