Hungry for the Lost

Mates. That's what we call bus conductors in Ghana- whether in English or any local language. They are loud. They are smart. They are straightforward, and definitely not complicated- well, except for some. Without microphone or any sophisticated media accoutrement, I dare say they are the most influential guys on our streets hollering out to masses of commuters.

Could we learn a lesson or two from mates? First off, let's look at their seeming indispensability. A week ago, I got on board a trotro to Church. The trotro had no mate, and how slow the trip was! The driver had to collect the fares, give the passengers change and slide the door open for each passenger that had to drop off. That meant he had to get down from the drivers' seat at every dropping stop. I felt quite sad for the driver that day as it affected everything about the journey. You see, even though the driver seems to be doing all the work in terms of conveying the passengers to their destination, the mate is actually a major thrust to his business. Mates are amazing administrators! I think we can learn from their accounting, their multitasking and quickness of apprehension. Yes, they may be annoying but they know their work, and they do it well!

The next lesson I suppose we can learn from the mate is his/her influence. I think mates can be great soul winners! A mate can literally turn an empty VIP bus into a full one in a matter of minutes. From shouting at the top of their voices to aggressively pulling prospective passengers to the bus, you can tell that they are hungry for passengers!

Are you that hungry for the souls of men to be saved?
