Normally, people live and die. The normal life people have is the one that begins somewhere- they were born- and they die. That's the natural life. The Bible says there is a time to be born and there's a time to die; that's talking of the natural life.
Originally, God did make man to die. Bit death came. Man actually was neither mortal nor immortal but there was mortality and immortality in the Garden. He ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil- which was death- and that's how death was introduced into the human spirit.
But in the new birth, we are born of the it's a kind of resurrection. Death is stronger than life but resurrected life (or Spirit life) is stronger than death. Now, Spirit life is the life we're supposed to have in God- the God-kind of life.
Jesus said, "I have come that [you] have life and that you might have it more abundantly."
"Life" is "Zoe" and "Zoe" is God's kind of life. So the life God gave us is His very life. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in us.
