One gloriously sunny Tuesday afternoon, I was glad and walked with joyous anticipation as I was getting ready for the second night of the Special Ministers' Conference with Pastor Benny Hinn in Ghana.
I first went to the Linguistics department after two successive lectures to write down my name for an Akan test to help one of the doctors in the department. Thankfully, I did not need to write down my name, I could simply take the test right that moment...so I took the test (which lasted about 30 minutes and earned some money after taking the test).
On my way out I met a dear lady I recognized from previous interaction through preaching the Gospel. So I asked how she was doing and she responded that she was not well. You know, people will often tell you, "I am fine." even if they were depressed. But she plainly confessed that she was not well. I asked her what the problem was. She said it was malaria. There was another lady standing next to her, so I called to her and explained to them about the prayer of agreement and we prayed the prayer of agreement. I knew that once we prayed it was settled, so I was excited with joy in my heart and gave praise to God.
As I kept on with my journey back to the hall, here comes this man smiling at me and reading the inscription on my shirt OUT LOUD, "Salvation is FREE. Come to Jesus."
I immediately recognized him from last semester, and I knew what he was up to. He wanted money. He was carrying a brown envelope and started to recount the same story he told me that day. Do you know what I did?
I stood there and gave him the sternest look I have ever given to any human being. I was not happy with the situation, not because I had to give to him, but because he was wasting his life.
I said to him, "I know you. Last year you told me this same story and now you're telling it to me again. God doesn't want you going around doing this all the time and have people ridiculing you. Please, you cannot afford to waste all the potential God has deposited in you by walking the streets constantly, begging for money."
So I offered him a job.
How?
Well, through the Herbalife programme, people, no matter their educational background, can earn money and break our of poverty.
(Let me add here that the man speaks very good English.)
The truth is that this man was already born again; he just needed to adjust his way of thinking. I told him that the moments and energy he constantly spent walking and begging could be used to sell the products and earn money legally.
I explained the entire business to him and then blessed him with the same cash I earned by taking the Akan test. Then I gave him my card to call me.
The Lord is faithful.
I have constantly confessed the Word of God, that I am a blessing. I am blessed to be a blessing.
I find that sometimes we err by making such confessions of the Word and acting contrarily, because we tend to hoard that which the Lord blesses us with and keep asking him for more. That's selfish...and it's the mentality of the poor.
Remember, "There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it ." (Proverbs 11:24-26).
I will say it again: strike up conversations with those God sends your way who beg you. You may be able to help them in ways huger than you ever imagined.
You're blessed to be a blessing to your world!
